![]() 04/18/2019 at 10:19 • Filed to: Asspat, VW Passat, How can you be so sure this post isn't a figment of your imagination?, Now what car will we make fun of?, Someone please get me out of gulag | ![]() | ![]() |
I lament to inform you guys that the Asspat™, my beloved and unreliable 2015 Passat TSI, went off to the VW service department in the sky.
My mother borrowed it to buy something at Publix and a moving van ran a red and hit the car head on. Since it’s worth about $3.20 in perfect shape, it’ll most likely be totaled. She’s fine and will more than likely be sore for a while, but my baby protected her against a large moving van. That’s all I care about.
Sure, it’ll hurt for a while, but she’ll be fine. All we have left is to see what the future holds for me. It’s been just over 3 years and 59k miles of making fun of how unreliable it is on here. I’ve spoken of the perils of VW ownership for years, but I’m kind of sad to see this chapter in my life come to an end like this. It’s the closure I neither expected nor wanted so soon. Regardless, I think it’s safe to say I’ll be car shopping in the near future. For now, I’ll be mourning the loss of the friend who’s been by my side (and at the dealership for warranty repairs) since my senior year of high school.
Long live the almighty Asspat™

Was it a company moving van or a rental?
![]() 04/18/2019 at 10:29 |

Rental.

Also, how are you gonna...well, get anywhere? Wasn’t this your only car?

RIP in peace

This is the most honorable way it was going to go, saving someone else, any other death would’ve involved sitting in a dealer lot and Nickel and diming another family outside of warranty

I appreciate it.
Cars can be replaced. Mothers, however, can’t.

That’ s an important thing to remember, I once mixed it up and learned that I could not aquire a new mother at the Ford dealership but walked on with a loan for an over priced fusion

Glad she came away without serious injury. H ave you thought about what to replace it with?
![]() 04/18/2019 at 10:54 |

I’m thinking Fusion Sport, Ranger STX, F150 XLT.
Maybe Mustang EcoBoost or GT.

Glad it all worked out. And it’s a shame you had such issues; my Mk7 Golf was the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. Hope you find a nice replacement.

This is similar to the wisdom my dad passed onto me after my first accident.
It’s just a thing that can be replaced, you can’t.

I’m noticing a pattern in the comments, though it’s not surprising. Sigh. Message clear and understood, I will no longer speak to you or attempt to. Hopefully one day everything can be good again, I wish you well. Godspeed and good luck finding your next car.

Some of the worst driving I’ve ever seen is rental trucks.

I’m glad mom is okay. At the end, the ASSPAT did its job and protected her .
But maybe you need a more reliable friend next time around?

The next one needs to have a blue oval on the front. I’ve been done with VW for quite a while.

This is what bothered me about my B5-vintage Passat back in the day. How can VW, in good faith, design and sell such an unreliable car to working families who will rely on it to feed themselves and put a roof over their heads?
![]() 05/07/2019 at 13:51 |
|
I’m glad that the car did what it was supposed to do.
So, with all the talk about VW reliability, did this one have any trouble during its short life with you?
![]() 05/07/2019 at 14:03 |

Its VW, they aren’t known for their conscience.

Yes. I’ve been complaining about it here since sometime in 2016. It went in for 28 warranty repairs in about a year and a half. Four of those were water pumps. We bought it in November 2015 or so and the warranty expired in May 2017 or so. It gave us no trouble from then until the fateful day. After this, I don’t want to see another VW in my driveway ever again. It also needed two AC compressors, three sets of rotors in 36k miles, needed two new keyless go systems, a new backup camera, a new parking brake, new steering rack, and a few others I can’t recall off the top of my head.
With that being said, it’s been good to us since around 36k miles. No problems to report thus far. It’s being fixed, so it should be back on the road soon.
(It replaced a 2014 Passat under Lemon Law. That one actually left us stranded.)

Holy crap, the ghosts of the B5/Mk4 era are still alive. That’s worse than the new-car life of my B5 back in the early 2000s, although mine had various expensive issues later on.
Shouldn’t new car warranties be at least 4 years here in the US?

I assume that people like me are the reason they made the switch to the now famous 6 year/72k mil e warranty.
